The Hidden Link: How Oral Health Protects Your Heart
September is more than just a month on the calendar – it’s a time for reflection on two vital aspects of our health. This month, South Africa observes Heart Awareness Month and Oral Health Month, culminating in World Heart Day on 29 September. While these may seem like separate campaigns, research has revealed a surprising and powerful connection: your mouth and your heart are deeply linked.
Your Mouth: The Gateway to Your Body
The state of your oral health doesn’t stay confined to your mouth. Poor dental hygiene, gum disease, and chronic infections can trigger inflammation, allowing bacteria to enter the bloodstream. Once there, they can contribute to the build-up of fatty deposits in blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other serious conditions.
This makes your teeth and gums more than just a cosmetic concern, they are frontline defenders of your overall well-being.
The South African Context
Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in South Africa, while preventable oral health issues such as gum disease and tooth decay remain widespread. High rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, and limited access to dental care create a perfect storm, leaving many South Africans vulnerable to both oral and heart disease.
By recognising the link between oral health and cardiovascular health, we can take simple yet powerful steps toward prevention.
Prevention is Power
The good news is that much of the risk can be reduced with small, consistent actions:
- Brush and floss daily to prevent plaque build-up.
- Check your blood pressure and sugar levels regularly.
- Adopt a healthy lifestyle: balanced diet, regular exercise, and no smoking.
- Visit your dentist and GP for regular check-ups. A routine dental exam could be the first step in detecting risks that affect your heart.
By treating oral care and heart health as part of the same wellness journey, you are investing in a healthier, longer life.
