Youth Day
1976–2026: The Courage of South Africa’s Youth Lives On
On 16 June 1976, thousands of South African students marched for education and a better future. They were met with violence. Hundreds died. Their sacrifice changed our nation forever.
Today, 50 years later, the struggle has changed but not disappeared.
Our young people still face barriers to opportunity, and one of the most fundamental is health.
The Reality for South African Youth Today:
- Mental health: Depression and anxiety increased 40% over the past decade
- Substance abuse: Drug use among teenagers rising rapidly
- Chronic disease: Type 2 diabetes, hypertension appearing in younger ages
- HIV: Prevalence remains high among young people, especially young women
- Access: Only 14.1% of South Africans have medical aid coverage
Health is the foundation upon which everything else is built. A young person struggling with untreated depression cannot focus on school. A teenager addicted to drugs cannot build a career. A young adult with unmanaged diabetes cannot work consistently.
