The SAMDP (South African Medical and Dental Practitioners Association) has a proud history of trailblazing policy change and transformation throughout healthcare in South Africa.
SAMDP | A History of Advocating Healthcare in South Africa
The Dawn of Equal Opportunity
The SAMDP was established in 1989 to advocate the policy interests of black healthcare professionals in South Africa.
A group of black doctors with a remarkable vision led by Dr Joe Maelane noted the dawn of political change in South Africa. They knew this was an auspicious time to act so that young, previously disadvantaged individuals could launch successful careers in health care.
The organisation played a pivotal role in the struggle against the apartheid regime, collaborating with like-minded organisations and engaging with the liberation movements. In the run-up to the pre-1994 healthcare reforms, SAMDP actively participated alongside other healthcare organisations and assisted in the formation of the Medical Association of South Africa (SAMA).
Within SAMA, the SAMDP continued as an influential interest group, with some prominent members, including Drs Mabasa, Letlape, Tshabangu, and Thulare, providing early leadership.
Realising a United Force in Healthcare in South Africa
Following the 1994 democratic elections, the SAMDP was primed to advocate the policy interests of black healthcare professionals and played a pivotal role in unifying South African healthcare professionals.
The organisation also played a central role in resolving the dispensing license issue among doctors. It was instrumental in designing the training course and certification for dispensing licenses.
SAMDP established an investment company to participate in the critical task of normalising and transforming businesses, particularly in the healthcare sector. SAMDP Group Holdings Reg. No. 2005/001506/06 was established in 2005 to house all SAMDP investments. It is a deliberate and calculated initiative to ensure the retention and alteration of professionals to serve previously disadvantaged groups.
Today, founders and political leaders of the country, such as Dr Letlape, Dr Motsoaledi, and Dr Thulare, remain members of the organisation.
