TB Awareness Month And Human Rights Day

March is TB Awareness Month, a crucial time to shine a spotlight on one of South Africa’s most persistent health challenges. World TB Day, observed on March 24, amplifies the urgency of ending tuberculosis—the world’s deadliest infectious disease. TB continues to devastate millions globally, causing severe health, social, and economic consequences.

This year’s theme, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” is a bold call for hope, urgency, and accountability. Ending TB is possible—but only if we raise awareness, remove stigma, and ensure access to healthcare for all.
This message ties in powerfully with Human Rights Day on March 21, reminding us that the right to healthcare is a fundamental human right. As we reflect on our progress, we also acknowledge the urgent need to break barriers in TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

To guide the country’s response, the National Strategic Plan (NSP) for HIV, TB, and STIs (2023-2028) serves as a blueprint and roadmap for tackling these epidemics. The full plan is available here.

Join the conversation globally! The World Health Organization is hosting an online TB Talkshow on March 24, 13:30 CET—be part of it here.

We will also update our social media platforms with any SA government events that will be hosted to commemorate World TB Day. Stay tuned for more details!
Last year, we explored these critical topics in depth—and the message is just as relevant today. Read our previous blogs to learn more.

Let’s keep the conversation going and take action for a healthier, more just South Africa.
