Festive Safety Tips From SAMDP

The festive season places a unique and intense set of demands on healthcare professionals. While the public celebrates, hospitals experience a significant surge in patients due to accidents, overindulgence, and travel-related injuries.

This increased workload often coincides with staff shortages, as colleagues take leave, forcing remaining teams to shoulder heavier burdens. For South African practitioners, this occurs within a system already under strain, where high patient-to-provider ratios and resource constraints are daily realities

The festive season is a time when emergency rooms see a rise in preventable injuries, road accidents and health emergencies. Celebration should never come at the cost of safety — yours or someone else’s.

As medical professionals, SAMDP urges everyone to prioritise festive safety so that joy does not turn into tragedy.

SAMDP’s Festive Safety Reminders:

  • Never drink and drive — arrange a designated driver or alternative transport.
  • Obey speed limits and rest during long journeys.
  • Use fireworks responsibly and keep children supervised.
  • Moderate alcohol intake and stay hydrated.
  • Manage chronic conditions carefully — take medication as prescribed.
  • Seek medical help early if something feels wrong.

The greatest gift this season is returning home safely. Let celebration be remembered for laughter — not loss.
