Under the 2024 theme, “Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development,” we turn our spotlight on a remarkable figure whose life embodies the spirit of this month.

Dr Gwendoline Malegwale Ramokgopa, affectionately known as Dr. Gwen, a loyal member and board member of the South African Medical and Dental Practioners Association (SAMDP) stands as a paragon of excellence in the South African health sector and formidable force in politics.

Her journey, marked by unwavering dedication and pioneering achievements, epitomises the very essence of Women’s Month – a time to honour the past, celebrate the present and inspire the future generations.

In this feature, we delve into the extraordinary contributions of this SAMDP torchbearer, Dr Gwen, an ardent jazz lover, who enjoys being at church but also having time to relax with her family. Her influence extends far beyond her professional accomplshments.

Carving a Legacy of Equity and Justice

Dr Gwen’s journey is not just a personal narrative, it’s a powerful chronicle of the strides women have made in shaping the democratic and developmental landscape of South Africa.

Much like a mighty river carving its’ path through the landscape, Dr Gwen’s contributions have shaped the democratic and developmental terrain of our nation.

Born in Atteridgeville, in the city of Tshwane, Dr Gwen has devoted her life to advocating for societal equity and justice.

With an MBChB medical degree and a Master’s in Public Health at the predecessor of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU). The Alumni at SMU has recently honored her with a Lifetime Achievers Award together with others.

She has navigated the complexities of the healthcare system with unwavering determination.

Her career is a testimony to her commitment, as she has served in various capacities, from a Medical Officer at Dr George Mukhari Hospital to the National Health Program Manager at the Independent Development Trust during South Africa’s transition to democracy. In the words of Nelson Mandela.

Dr Gwen embodies this belief, using her education and expertise as tools to uplift communities and foster health equity.

Dr Gwen’s dedication to healthcare extends to her role as an associate of the World Health Organization (WHO) collaborating Centre on Social Determinants of Health and Health in all Policies at the University of Pretoria. This affiliation underscores her passion for addressing the broader determinants of health and advancing policies that prioritise holistic well-being.

Contribution to Politics & Public Service

Making an indelible impact which extends beyond medicine into the realm of politics, where she has become a formidable advocate for health-related policies, Dr Gwen’s journey
through public service is akin to a seasoned gardener nurturing a diverse garden: she cultivates growth and prosperity in every role she undertakes.

As a Special Advisor to the Minister in the Presidency in 2023 and Chancellor at Tshwane University of Technology until October 2023, she has sown the seeds of innovation and excellence in education.

Dr. Gwen’s multifaceted involvement in organisations such as the South African Medical and Dental Practitioners Association (SAMDP) as a board member, and her leadership roles in various councils exemplify this philosophy, as she consistently contributes to the greater good. Her leadership is further evidenced by her involvement as a board member of the Medical Women of South Africa, and the Medical Cooperative Bank.

Her governance roles include board positions at NETCARE, Nozala, Workers Health and Medipost, and executive roles in the City Council of Pretoria and the City of Tshwane, including Executive Chairperson and Executive Mayor.

At the provincial level, Dr. Gwen served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Health in Gauteng from 1999 to 2006 and again from 2017 to 2019 and at National level, she was Deputy Minister of Health from October 2010 to May 2014, emphasising her unwavering commitment to public service.

Dr. Gwen has never chosen to be neutral in situations of injustics or even shied away from standing up for what is right, embodying the courage and conviction needed to drive meaningful change. Her contributions have earned her numerous accolades, a testament to her impact across various sectors.

Her election as Treasurer General of the African National Congress (ANC) in December 2022 underscores her dedication to the ideals of the liberation movement and her continues commitment to public service.

In celebrating 30 years of democracy, we honour Dr Gwen Ramokgopa.
