SA’s Aging Population: What SAMDP Needs to Know
As the global spotlight falls on population dynamics, SAMDP turns its focus to one of South Africa’s most pressing and under-discussed challenges: our rapidly aging population.
South Africa’s population is growing older. According to Statistics South Africa, the proportion of citizens aged 60 and above has been steadily increasing — projected to reach nearly 15% of the population by 2050. This demographic shift has wide-reaching implications for our healthcare system, economy, and social structures.
What this means for SAMDP:
- Increased demand for geriatric care: Our healthcare professionals must be equipped to manage chronic illnesses, cognitive decline, and mobility issues associated with older age.
- Strain on public health infrastructure: With older adults living longer, there will be a growing need for long-term care services, palliative care, and age-friendly facilities.
- Policy advocacy is key: SAMDP has a critical role to play in championing health policies that cater to an aging society—ensuring dignity, access, and quality care for all.
Did You Know?
- By 2050, South Africa will have double the number of older adults compared to today.
- Non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease are now the leading health burdens among this age group.
- Only a small fraction of South African medical practitioners specialise in geriatric care—presenting a gap that SAMDP members can help fill.
Why World Population Day Matters to Us?
While the 2025 theme focuses on youth empowerment, it reminds us that population issues are interconnected across generations. Preparing today for a healthier, more supported older population is part of building a fair and hopeful future for all.
