Tribute to Dr Norman Mabasa
The South African Medical and Dental Practitioners Association (SAMDP NPC) mourns the passing of one of our own, Dr Norman Mabasa, fondly known as Comrade Mphatha.

Dr Mabasa was more than a colleague, he was a pillar of principle, dignity, and compassion. His life’s work bore witness to his unwavering commitment to professional integrity, fairness, and the upliftment of both patients and practitioners. He believed that true leadership is measured not by position, but by service, humility, and the courage to always speak truth to power.
We are deeply saddened by this loss, yet we remain profoundly grateful for his example. His values live on in the standards he upheld, the lives he touched, and the path he illuminated for all who serve in healthcare.
To Comrade Mphatha, we salute you. We bow our head in gratitude. You have walked the path of service, shaped character where it was needed, and carried the torch of ethical leadership with humility. We are poorer without your voice in our association, your presence in our boardroom, your compassion in the healthcare sector, but we are forever richer for your example.

May your memory inspire courage where there is fear, clarity where there is confusion, compassion where there is coldness. May every heartbeat in the healthcare sector that yearns for justice find in you a guiding light.
As Maya Angelou once said:
“A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.”
Dr Mabasa was such a soul. His voice united colleagues, his compassion bound communities, and his integrity brought light even in difficult times. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit continues to gather us, reminding us of what it means to serve selflessly, to lead ethically, and to live with courage.
Rest in peace, Dr Mabasa. Your work endures. Your impact remains. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
