Oral Health Month 2025: Celebrating Smiles, Stories, and South Africa’s Dental Champions
“Every smile is a light that has the power to brighten even the darkest day.”
September is Oral Health Month, a time when we pause to celebrate something so simple, yet so powerful—a smile. This year, under the World Health Organisations theme, “A Happy Mouth … Is a Happy Mind,” we are reminded that oral health is not only about teeth. It is about dignity, confidence, and the radiant joy that comes from living pain-free and unafraid to smile.
For the South African Medical and Dental Practitioners (SAMDP), this month is an opportunity to honour the unsung heroes of healthcare—our dentists. They are not only caretakers of teeth; they are builders of confidence, guardians of well-being, and, as one dentist so beautifully puts it, “life-changers and lifesavers.”
Among these champions, one name shines brightly: Dr. Odirile Rooi—a woman and dental expert whose story is as inspiring as the smiles she restores.
A Life Rooted in Faith, Family, and Ambition
Dr. Rooi is not defined by one title alone. She is a mother, entrepreneur, mentor, community leader, and dental expert—an embodiment of how passion and purpose can intersect to create impact. As CEO of Adorable Smiles & Co, with practices in Virginia and Welkom, in the Free State, she has built more than a business; she has built sanctuaries where patients feel safe, valued, and cared for.
Her story is rooted in resilience and faith. Born in London to South African parents, her family returned home in 1990, sensing South Africa’s hopeful new dawn. Her academic journey is a testimony to determination and vision. Growing up in Pretoria, she completed a Bachelor of Science at MEDUNSA in 2004 and later earned her dental degree from the University of Limpopo in 2010. Eager to deepen her expertise, Dr. Rooi holds a postgraduate diploma in Interceptive Orthodontics from University of the Western Cape (UWC) and is currently pursuing a postgraduate diploma in Paediatric Dentistry. Her horizons extend beyond South Africa’s borders too. She also undertook a comprehensive two-year orthodontic training course with PDS Spain, a true testament to her commitment to global best practices. Every qualification is more than a certificate; it is a brick in the foundation of her life’s purpose—to ensure that even in small towns, families have access to world-class care.
Balancing her thriving career with family life, Dr. Rooi juggles the joys of parenting, homework, karate, dance, soccer, and her passions for hiking, travelling, and teaching Sunday School, living a full, faith-grounded life. Dr. Rooi embodies the spirit of a modern South African woman: grounded, compassionate, and visionary.
What Inspired a Lifetime in Dentistry
Dr. Rooi’s journey to dentistry was not straightforward. Initially aspiring to study medicine, her grades delayed that path. However, this detour into student politics and leadership, representing science students as SRC council member and deputy secretary of SASCO at MEDUNSA, opened a new horizon.
“I realized that whatever I do, it must be to help the community around me,” she reflects. With a gentle heart and scientific curiosity, dentistry emerged as a natural fit, suggested by a friend. As she humorously notes, dentistry students “just looked more put together than the medical students.” From that moment, her passion was ignited.
What keeps Dr. Rooi motivated?
It is a rich tapestry of influences and inspirations. It’s a combination of professional growth, community engagement, and spiritual upliftment. She is deeply rooted in faith, which anchors her through challenges and triumphs. She draws strength from her family—the joy of raising children, helping with homework, attending karate, dance, and soccer practices, and teaching Sunday School. She also regularly attends events hosted by the Dental Professional Association (DPA), connecting with peers to discuss industry innovations, entrepreneurial challenges, and community development.
Professionally, she is fuelled by mentorship from pioneers like Dr. Kenny Chokwe and Dr. Nkumeleni, whose guidance sharpened her entrepreneurial and clinical vision, enabling her to build and manage thriving practices. Beyond dentistry, she draws inspiration from women-centred events worldwide: Wings of Hope hosted by Dr. Ntombi Shabangu locally and internationally; Woman Evolve Conference in Dallas, Texas, hosted by Pastor Sarah Jakes; the Love Life Conference in Tampa, Florida, hosted by Joyce Meyer; and the Success from the Inside Out Retreat in St Petersburg, Florida, a career highlight. These events remind her that dentistry is more than a profession—it is a calling to uplift, to serve, and to lead.
Together, these influences fuel her resilience, sharpen her vision, and strengthen her commitment to creating healthier, happier communities and empowering her to serve beyond the clinic.
Oral Health: The Gateway to Whole-Body Well-Being
Dentistry is sometimes underestimated as a medical discipline. To many, dentistry is about cavities, braces, or cleanings, but as Dr. Rooi passionately states: “Dentists do save lives, we save lives and change lives.”
In 2025, the WHO’s theme “A happy Mouth … Is a happy mind,” perfectly encapsulates dentistry’s impact. Relief from dental pain transforms lives; restoring smiles rebuilds confidence and opens doors to new possibilities. Their practice motto- “You are never fully dressed without your smile”- speaks to the intrinsic link between oral and emotional health.
More critically, gum disease, especially periodontitis, is linked to systemic illnesses. Bacterial accumulation in the mouth exacerbates hypertension and complicates diabetes management. It can lead to pneumonia in the elderly and is linked to premature births and low birth weights. Dentists play a crucial role in educating patients and collaborating with medical colleagues to manage these risks.
Dentistry intersects powerfully with other fields, collaborating with oncologic and trauma surgeons, oncologists, maxillofacial prosthodontists, speech therapists, and nutritionists to restore function and quality of life after trauma or disease.
Bringing Excellence and Compassion to Small Towns
While world-class dental care is often associated with big cities, Dr. Rooi believes small towns like Virginia and Welkom deserve the first-class dental care. Adorable Smiles is thoughtfully designed to create positive experiences, especially for children, aiming to nurture generations that embrace preventive care without fear. Adults, too, are gently guided past old anxieties to rediscover trust in dental care.
Their gentle approach addresses negative past experiences adults may have faced, making dental visits a positive, cherished event. Community outreach is a year-round commitment—from water point support during walks to school screenings and engagement with special needs schools.
A standout project this year was their visit to Bonsai School for Autism, where many parents have felt let down by healthcare services. The team’s genuine connection and tailored care helped children feel seen and valued, a meaningful breakthrough in small-town healthcare.
Building a Strong Team for Comprehensive Care
Dr. Rooi recognizes the power of teamwork. Working alongside oral hygienists, dental therapists, and a supportive staff, from administration to associate dentists, her practice offers comprehensive, patient-centred care that uplifts every visitor’s experience.
This holistic approach ensures that every member plays a vital role in making dental care accessible, effective, and compassionate.
Words of Wisdom for Future Dentists
For aspiring dentists, Dr. Rooi offers heartfelt advice that echo with hope and courage: “Your passion for helping others should be your foundation. One day, the world will smile brighter because of you.” She acknowledges real challenges such as startup costs and employment difficulties but urges young dentists to lean into community, keep learning, and never lose sight of the heart behind the science. She also urges them to join supporting organizations like DPA and SAMDP, and to keep learning—about clinical skills and soft skills alike.
Her message is hopeful and empowering: “One day, the world will smile brighter because of you.” With persistence, community, and compassion, the next generation can forge rewarding paths, transforming health and lives.
